Also, sometimes packages or vehicles are stopped at customs, which would also stop the package from moving further.
Generally speaking, if your package is stuck in transit for any significant amount of time, you will be contacted somehow by your courier to discuss the situation. They should get in touch to let you know what has happened to your order and how long it will be before you can reasonably expect the package to be on the road again.
Ultimately, although there are a few situations like this which might be the fault of the courier, most events which would cause this are out of their control. It won't usually help you to call a courier and complain that a package is stuck. They are usually going to already be doing everything in their power to get the ball rolling again.
