Carriage bolts are a kind of screw that is used to fasten together two pieces of wood. In some cases, it can be custom-made together with a nut in order to work in steel. During the Second World War, the sizes of the bolts were standardized so that it could be shared among United States, Great Britain and the rest of the allied forces. It is amazing to imagine that a simple fastener was instrumental in the victory of the allied forces.
