Carriage bolts are a kind of screw that is used to fasten together two pieces of wood. In some cases, it can be custom-made together with a nut in order to work in steel. On several occasions, it is also called plow bolts, coach bolts or even lag bolts. Coach bolts are the term used if it is a highly durable screw that is primarily used to join big timbers together. It is usually called carriage bolts if it is smaller in size and has a square head that is designed to be used with a wrench or pliers.

These bolts in particular usually have a threaded shaft that gets thinner at one end while at the other end is the head. In order to put together two timbers, it has to be driven inside the wood by turning the head of the screw clockwise. The threads are specifically designed to strengthen the clasping of two lumbers by biting the timber during its entry. On the other hand, the head makes sure that the bolt does not go through the wood and also acts like a nut on the other end.

Carriage bolts are an excellent choice for furniture manufacturers to put together the wood components of the furniture. Living room furniture that is seen in most houses today has a skeleton that is put together using a bolt. Although nails have been widely used, the bolts are a better choice to make the base sturdier. To cover the nasty look of the carriage bolts, it is usually wrapped around in foam and then neatly covered with velvet or leather to have a sophisticated look.

The fore fathers of these bolts were actually made up of wood and have been around since the beginning of the Roman Empire. They were used to put together their chariots which were swift two wheeled wagons that were driven by a number of big and swift horses. Through the use of these chariots, the Romans dominated their foes in almost all battles that they encountered. The catapult was also assembled by using the wooden bolts. And because of this, it had helped the Romans win the epic battles that ensured the growth of their mighty empire.

The metal screws which were in essence the birth of the modern carriage bolts started to be used in the late 19th century. It was during this time that we can see a massive manufacturing of screws to cater to the demand of growing construction all over the world. During the Second World War, the sizes of the bolts were standardized so that it could be shared among United States, Great Britain and the rest of the allied forces. The scarcity of metal during that time ensured that any member of the alliance would be able to ship it to the one in need and still have a perfect fit. It is amazing to imagine that a simple fastener was instrumental in the victory of the allied forces.
