He's done it again! Country mainstay and ACM Artist of the Decade George Strait has landed atop the country music charts, again, with his album Twang. The album is sitting pretty atop Billboard's Country chart and Billboard 200 chart and, according to Nielson SoundScan, has sold over 155,000 copies within its first week of release. Strait's 38th album (seriously!), Twang's release date was pushed up to August 11 when its first single, "Living for the Night," managed to make it into the Top 15 on the country charts after just three weeks.
In addition to the high chart placement, Strait told The Boot that he was also proud of the song because he wrote it with his son Bubba Strait and songwriting legend Dean Dillon. "It makes a papa proud to have my son contributing to the creation of this record. We had a great time writing with each other and then Dean adding his magic made it even more special. I hope people that buy this record have as much fun listening to it as I had making it," said Strait effusively.
In addition to being a family affair, "Living for the Night" is the first song Strait has written since "I Can't See Texas From Here" off his 1982 debut album Strait Country. Strait also had a hand in penning two more tracks from his most recent album, "Out Of Sight Out Of Mind" and "He's Got That Something Special," while Bubba is credited with writing "Arkansas Drive," proving that talent definitely runs in the family!
When ACM Artist of the Decade George Strait emerged onto the country music scene in the early 1980s, he instantly found success on the charts with Top 10 singles "Unwound," his debut single, and "If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger (There's One Coming Home)." Strait continued to churn out hit singles into the 1990s, spawning an astounding 31 Number-One singles along the way, starting with 1982's "Fool Hearted Melody," and adopting a smoother sound as the years progressed while still maintaining the honky tonk sound that made him famous in the first place.
While many country artists failed to remain successful throughout the transition from the '80s to the '90s, which saw Garth Brooks nearly take over the charts, Strait was unstoppable. Released in 1995, Strait's four-disc box set career-spanning Strait Out of the Box became one of the best-selling box sets in the history of popular music, and his 1996 album Blue Clear Sky debuted at the top spot on the country charts.
After releasing a few more successful albums, George Strait released an eponymous album in 2000; George Strait spawned the hit single "Go On" and proved that Strait was poised to reign over the country charts for yet another decade. Strait experimented with less-traditional vocal processing on his next album, the aptly titled 2001 release The Road Less Travelled, and has not slowed down his pace since, continuing to release albums year after year.
