Michael Jackson is no longer the man behind the best-selling album of the week. Jackson's Number Ones has been the best-selling album in the country for several weeks on the Billboard 200 since his death, but that all ended this week when George Strait's highly-anticipated new release Twang dropped, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Twang, Strait's fifth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, sold a reported 155,000 copies this week on its way to the top of the charts, surging ahead of Neil Diamond's new CD/DVD package Hot August Night/NYC, which also debuted this week.
Fueled by the No. 7-charting single "Living for the Night," Strait's Twang hit the Billboard 200 ahead of Neil Diamond's Hot August Night/NYC (No. 2), The Black Eyed Peas' The E.N.D. (No. 3), Cobra Starship's Hot Mess (No. 4), Kings of Leon's Only By the Night (No. 5), NOW 31 (No. 6), Maxwell's BLACKsummer's night (No. 7), Daughtry's Leave This Town (No. 8), Taylor Swift's Fearless (No. 9) and Justin Moore's Justin Moore (No. 10), reigning atop the Billboard charts - a familiar territory for the crooked-smiled vocalist known 'round the heartland as the King of Country.
While George Strait's debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with his latest album Twang is a monumental feat, the accomplishment is not the country crooner's ultimate accolade. Strait has been a longtime award-winning vocalist in the country music industry, even winning a Grammy Award in 2008 for the album Troubadour and also hitting No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with albums Carrying Your Love with Me (1997), 50 Number Ones (2004), Somewhere Down in Texas (2005) and Troubadour (2008).
His number ones on the country charts for both albums and singles have been countless, and George Strait tickets to his hundreds of concerts over the years have consistently sold out at the snap of a finger. It seems as if Twang is simply the icing on the cake for this cowboy hat-wearing heartthrob, and it's all part of the George Strait legacy that began in the early '80s with the Top 10 hit "Unwound."
George Strait, a Southern boy raised on a ranch in Texas, made his big break in the music industry in 1981 after spending a few years in the Army and dabbling with a number of local bands. After the release of "Unwound," Strait released his debut album Strait Country the same year and jumpstarted a decade of hits, as the album sparked a string of 31 number one-charting singles. Taking his unique style of honky tonk-infused neo-traditional country music, George Strait easily became a dominant fixture on the country music scene through the '90s and '00s, scoring more chart-topping singles than not.
Country anthems like "I Cross My Heart," "Easy Come, Easy Go," "Cowboys Like Us," "She Let Herself Go" and "Check Yes or No" have been cemented into the canon of country music classics, and the legendary George Strait continues pounding out the hits, most recently with 2008-2009 smash singles "I Saw God Today," "Troubadour" and "Living for the Night." The King of Country continues his quest to rule the Music City world, and fans can catch him in concert with hard-to-get tickets, available now online.
